  • Barack Obama 39% (44%) [39%]
Health care
  • Mitt Romney 46% (41%)
  • Barack Obama 42% (44%)
National security
  • Barack Obama 45% (45%)
  • Mitt Romney 42% (41%)
Taxes
  • Mitt Romney 47% (45%)
  • Barack Obama 42% (45%)
Energy Policy
  • Mitt Romney 45%
  • Barack Obama 43%
National survey of 1,000 likely voters was conducted April 10-11, 2012. The margin of error is +/- 3 percentage points.  Results from the poll conducted March 1-2, 2012 are in parentheses.  Results from the poll conducted January 13-14, 2012 are in square brackets.

Inside the numbers:
Eighty-three percent (83%) of Republicans have more faith in Romney on economic matters, while 74% of Democrats trust Obama more. But 20% of Democrats express more confidence in the likely Republican nominee, compared to only nine percent (9%) of GOP voters who like the president more in this area. Romney has a very slight edge in trust – 40% to 37% - among voters not affiliated with either of the major parties.

While Republicans and Democrats predictably line up behind their respective candidates, unaffiliated voters trust the president more by double-digit margins when it comes to national security and energy policy. They trust Obama more than Romney by nine points when it comes to health care.
