Survey of 800 registered voters, including a subsample of likely voters, was conducted October 23-25, 2012. The margin of error is +/- 3.5 percentage points among all registered voters. Results from the poll conducted September 17-20, 2012 are in parentheses.

Inside the numbers:

Kerrey's numbers have risen in all three of the state's congressional districts and among men and women.

But his biggest gain was with voters who identify themselves as independents. In September, Kerrey held only a 6 percentage point lead among independent voters. As of last week, Kerrey held a 24-point lead among independents.

Fischer continues to dominate western Nebraska, where she enjoys the support of 57 percent of registered voters in the 3rd Congressional District. Her support there dropped only slightly from September, when she had 60 percent among registered voters.

Kerrey also has managed to narrow the gender gap, although Fischer still remains strongest with male voters. In September, Fischer had a 20 percentage point lead among men. That has now dropped to 14 points.

Inside the numbers: 

Kerrey has the support of 79% of Nebraska Democrats, while 85% of the state’s Republicans favor Fischer. Voters not affiliated with either of the major parties prefer the Democrat by four points.

Fischer is viewed very favorably by 30% of Nebraska voters and very unfavorably by just seven percent (7%). Twenty-six percent (26%) share a very favorable opinion of Kerrey, but 31% regard him very unfavorably.
