Looking back, were the bailouts of the auto industry good for the United States or bad for the United States?

Official estimates indicate that the government will lose tens of billions of dollars on the auto bailouts. Knowing that the government lost money on the auto bailouts, would you say that the bailouts were a success or a failure?

Survey of 1,000 likely voters was conducted November 8-9, 2012. The margin of error is +/- 3 percentage points.
Inside the numbers:
Seventy-eight percent (78%) of Democrats think the auto bailouts were good for the country, compared to 22% of Republicans. A plurality (46%) of voters not affiliated with either political party agrees more with Democrats.
After learning that the government will lose money on the bailouts, 66% of Democrats still support them while 74% of GOP voters and 50% of unaffiliateds deem them a failure.
Younger voters are more supportive of the auto bailouts compared to their elders.

As has always been the case, Michigan voters are more supportive of the government bailouts of General Motors and Chrysler compared to voters on the national level. Fifty-nine percent (59%) of Michigan voters regard the bailouts as a success, and 46% continue to say so even when told the government lost billions on the bailouts. Just 21% of Michigan voters believe the government made money on the bailouts; 35% say it lost money, and 28% think it pretty much broke even.
Forty-eight percent (48%) of Michigan voters share a favorable impression of public employee unions, while nearly as many (45%) view them unfavorably. That's comparable to findings nationally. Obama draws strong support from Michigan voters who view public employee unions favorably, while Romney earns most of the vote from those with an unfavorable impression.
Voters in the Wolverine State are closely divided over the Republican’s business background: 41% say Romney’s track record in business is a reason to vote for him, but 43% see it as a reason to vote against him. Sixteen percent (16%) are undecided.
