Inside the numbers:
Most Democrats (68%) favor stricter gun laws. Most Republicans (74%) and adults not affiliated with either party (55%) are opposed to them.
A plurality (49%) of women believes the country needs stricter gun control laws. Sixty-two percent (62%) of men disagree.
Thirty-eight percent (38%) of Americans report owning a gun, and perhaps it’s not surprising that 71% of those gun owners are opposed to stricter gun control laws. A majority (56%) of Americans who don’t own a gun favor tougher gun laws.
Eighty-three (83%) of gun owners think greater restrictions on guns will either increase violent crime in this country or have no impact. A plurality (48%) of non-gun owners says they would reduce such crimes, but just 14% of gun owners agree.
