Poll Watch: Howey/DePauw Indiana 2012 Republican Senatorial Primary Survey

Survey of 700 likely GOP primary voters was conducted April 30 - May 1, 2012, by Republican pollster Christine Matthews, the president of Alexandria, Va.-based Bellwether Research, and Democratic pollster Fred Yang, of D.C.-based Garin-Hart-Yang Research Group. The margin of error for each sample is +/- 3.7 percentage points.  Party ID: 76% Republican; 23% Independent; 1% Democrat.  Political ideology: 44% Very conservative; 33% Somewhat conservative; 19% Moderate; 1% Liberal.  Results from the poll conducted March 26-28, 2012 are in parentheses.

Survey of 400 likely GOP primary voters was conducted May 1, 2012. The margin of error is +/- 4.9 percentage points.
Inside the numbers:
While Lugar leads Mourdock by 11 points among women, Mourdock enjoys an 8-point advantage among men.

Mourdock holds a 42-point advantage among self-described “tea party” members, 62 percent to 20 percent. Among those who do not consider themselves tea party members, Lugar leads 64 percent to 19 percent.

Self-identifying “conservatives” side with Mourdock, but only narrowly, 42 percent to 38 percent.
