Pew Research Survey on Iran's Nuclear Weapons Program

In your opinion, which is more important: to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, even if it means taking military action; or to avoid a military conflict with Iran, even if it means they may develop nuclear weapons?
  • Prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, even if it means taking military action 64% (58%)
  • Avoid a military conflict with Iran, even if it means they may develop nuclear weapons 25% (30%)
Among Democrats
  • Prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, even if it means taking military action 62% (50%)
  • Avoid a military conflict with Iran, even if it means they may develop nuclear weapons 25% (38%)
Among Republicans
  • Prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, even if it means taking military action 80% (74%)
  • Avoid a military conflict with Iran, even if it means they may develop nuclear weapons 14% (16%)
Among Independents
  • Prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, even if it means taking military action 59% (55%)
  • Avoid a military conflict with Iran, even if it means they may develop nuclear weapons 32% (34%)
Survey of 1,501 adults was conducted March 13-17, 2013. The margin of error is +/- 2.9 percentage points. Results from the poll conducted February 8-12, 2012 are in parentheses.
