Rasmussen (R) 2012 Presidential Poll

In political terms, is Barack Obama very liberal, somewhat liberal, moderate, somewhat conservative, or very conservative?
  • Very liberal 43%
  • Somewhat liberal 25%
  • Moderate 24%
  • Somewhat conservative 5%
  • Very conservative 2%
In political terms, is Mitt Romney very liberal, somewhat liberal, moderate, somewhat conservative, or very conservative?
  • Very liberal 5%
  • Somewhat liberal 12%
  • Moderate 23%
  • Somewhat conservative 42%
  • Very conservative 18%
Survey of 1,000 likely voters was conducted April 26-27, 2012. The margin of error is +/- 3 percentage points.

Inside the numbers:
Not surprisingly, Democrats see Obama as much less liberal than Republicans do. Similarly, voters in the president’s party view Romney as more conservative than GOP voters do, although the gap between the two is much narrower when it comes to the Republican hopeful.

Among voters not affiliated with either of the major political parties, 62% see Obama as liberal, and 57% view Romney as conservative. But while 40% of these voters say the president is Very Liberal, just 16% believe the Republican is Very Conservative.

There’s little difference of opinion between male and female voters when it comes to where the president stands ideologically. Men view Romney as a bit more conservative than women do.

While voters of all ages generally share the same view of the GOP contender, older voters tend to see Obama as more liberal than those under 40 do.

Sixty-two percent (62%) of liberal voters identify the president as one of them, although only nine percent (9%) of this group think of him as Very Liberal. Fifty-eight percent (58%) of conservatives rate Romney as a fellow conservative, but just eight percent (8%) describe him as Very Conservative.
